"One of my grandmas once shoved an unwed pregnant woman out of the way and locked her in the bathroom to keep her out of the family Christmas photo."

I live in Australia where an issue, especially for rural people, is whether or not Aboriginies are people or vermin. A friend with whom I studied at university is from a family whose roots go back to the days when Aborigines were gunned down as vermin or poisoned with flour laced with strychnine. Needless to say she changed sides and wrote a 1st Class Honours Thesis on the settlement of her family's part of Queensland. Her family found every photograph in which she appeared and razered her out. Family portraits were not quietly retired. They stand proudy in plain sight and in albums with my friend literally cut out of the photos. This is such a powerful metaphor for the disfigurement of their souls. They are proud to be less than fully human - Morlocks out and proud in the light of day.
