I agree that an armed response to domestic terrorism is a necessary but last resort - let's call it Plan B. Plan A should be, build a robust community capable of recognising and mobilising in response to provocation, whether in the form of propaganda, manipulation of governance procedures, or physical intimidation, etc. If we understood why we are at such an impasse we might have a better idea about how to rebuild a robust and cohesive community. Like scientific models, historical and sociological theories need to be learned, understood and applied critically and adapted as needed. One such historical theory that explicitly seeks to explain the way things change and the way they stay the same is the work of William Strauss and Neil Howe. Their book The Fourth Turning is an intriguing theory about history as cyclical, which is NOT to say that it repeats itself, but that something about the "DNA" of human society results in the a "seasonal" cycle of generational responses to what has gone before. If they are correct we are in a position to see our present situation in relation that cycle and think constructively about how to respond now to better ensure that as we move towards the next transition we make choices to build constructively on what is best about how we live and have lived. The theory is the core of a 2019 Broadway show, Heroes of the Fourth Turning. It depicts conservatives grappling with the theory of which, by the way, Steve Bannon is an enthusiastic devotee. Should that deter progressives from looking in to it? We are the losers if it does. I commend it to all readers.
